[edit] Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first day of the first moon of the lunar calendar. It can be as early as January 21st and February 19th in the solar calendar. Of all the Chinese festivals, the new year is probably the most celebrated and important. This festival also stresses the importance of family ties. On the new year's eve, family members gather together for a delicious dinner. Even if a member is absent, a seat will be left alone meaning that person's presence is at the banquet.

The preparations of the chinese new year start well before the new year itself. For example, people start cleaning their house 10 days before the new year. Then people start to decorate the house with some spring couplets, symbolic flowers, new years pictures and also preparing the lai-see envelopes for the New year's day.

On the first day of the Chinese new year, the celebrations are a family affair. Starting from the second day of the new year that people go to close relatives' and friends' houses to congratulate the new year (bai nian).
